About Us

The Institute of Nutrition Sciences at Kagawa Nutrition University (IoNS-KNU, or IoNS) is a research institute established on 1 October 1990 at Kagawa Education Institute of Nutrition (KEIN). IoNS was established to respond a demand for a sophistication of research structure after establishment of a doctoral program at KNU in previous year (1989). Since its establishment, IoNS aims to serve as a research center to investigate healthy lifestyle for the 21st Century and contribute maintenance and promotion of people’s healthy lifestyle. Further, IoNS also aims to provide research outputs for a diverse range of people in the society so that they can utilize them for their health promotion purposes.

A history of research activity at KEIN is long and Kagawa Research Institute, the predecessor of IoNS, was established in 1937 at Honkomagome, Bunkyo district in Tokyo. Dr. Shozo and Dr. Aya Kagawa, the founders of KEIN were conducting research on Nutrition under supervision of Dr. Junjiro Shimazono, Prof. of Department of No. 1 Internal Medicine, Faculty of Medicine at the University of Tokyo, prior to the establishment of KEIN. Therefore, IoNS embodies the philosophy of KEIN that research is important in education and development of Nutrition.

IoNS consists of three Domains – the Domain of Health Sciences, the Domain of Applied Nutrition, and the Domain of Cultural Studies and Social Sciences – together with KNU Nutrition Clinic, that has been opened since 1968 on the campus, to conduct research, teaching, and supervision from different perspectives. In September 2014, the Domain of Sports Nutrition was newly formed to organize a structure to enable research activities on relationships between exercise/sports and diet/nutrients. In addition to these activities, IoNS undertake research and lectures on request from companies and medical facilities. Further, IoNS delivers latest and cutting-edge nutritional knowledge to the society and its promotion via seminars and publication of scientific journal.
